Two sisters armed with an entrepreneurial spirit and vast experience in their respective fields have launched a post-op recovery business designed for the well-heeled who are seeking an added layer of care and luxury as they heal from surgery. Lexi Maldonado, RN, BSN and Erika Maldonado, EdD have launched Calicia Care, a portmanteau of their beloved grandmothers’ first names Carmen and Alicia, as one of the few such businesses in the nation devoted to serving this rarified, affluent patient base.
“We are so excited to have launched our business here in the most coveted zip code in the country. Since opening our doors, we have been welcomed by local surgeons who understand their patients well enough to instantly recognize how incorporating our services into their treatment protocol can greatly improve patient outcomes,” says Lexi, whose extensive nursing background set the stage for this new venture. “The business operates with me carefully selecting and training our nursing staff who are taught to exceed our patients’ high expectations.”
Adds sister Erika, “While Lexi is deeply involved in the training and treatment side of the business, I am working behind the scenes introducing surgeons to Calicia Care’s myriad services. I also focus on the complicated and often last-minute logistics that the business demands.”
According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, more than 40% of patients experience post-op complications ranging from infections, bleeding, urinary retention, difficulty breathing and accelerated heart rate to increases and decreases in blood pressure, pulmonary embolisms and kidney failure.
“Our number one goal is to offer the highest level of nursing care possible in the days following surgery to eliminate, or at least minimize, such complications,” explains Lexi, who says that round-the-clock professional care allows its nurses to move quickly should there be a complication.”
At this early stage of the business, Calicia Care has been working primarily with plastic surgeons as their patients tend to have the disposable income to afford its services that extend well beyond taking care of their medical needs.
“We offer our patients such amenities as limousine transportation to and from the surgery center accompanied by their own dedicated nurse, a suite at a luxury hotel such as the Beverly Wilshire where they receive 24/7 attention, private entries and elevators to avoid the gazing eyes of the public and a great number of other, more unusual services to meet their unusual demands,” says Lexi. “We’ve been tasked with removing the existing art from the hotel suite and replacing it with paintings from the patient’s own collection. We’ve hired masseurs, acupuncturists, Reiki experts for energy healing and even a Feng shui specialist to prepare the room before check-in.”
Glenn Vallecillos, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills who contracts with Calicia Care, says that having professional post-op care can be a life-saver.
“Sometimes the recovery process is rough and having to depend on a family member to rise to the occasion should a medical emergency present itself is not the secret to a happy relationship or healthy outcome,” he says. “Using a service like Calicia Care removes the stress that can be experienced not only by patients but by their family members as well.”
